Using Footage

  • Research

When researching a particular topic or area, we recommend that you start by browsing our YFA Online section, which features over 60 hours of film footage, and also our full catalogue containing text-based entries for thousands more titles.

If you’re interested in watching any films that aren’t currently available online, we have public viewing facilities which accommodate up to 8 people at a time.

In certain cases – subject to copyright – we can provide DVD copies of films, for personal use only, at a cost of £25 per title. Contact us for more information.

For commercial use of footage, please refer to the section below.

All viewings are by appointment, and are free of charge. To find out more, or to make a booking, get in touch by phone or email.

  • Broadcast

Our collections contain footage dating back to the very early days of filmmaking, right up to the present day. YFA’s access team have a wealth of experience working with broadcasters, production companies, and other media professionals: YFA footage has been used in series such as BBC Reel History of Britain, BBC Nation on Film, and The Way We Were.

Initial searches can be made via our YFA Online and catalogue sections, but please do get in touch if you can’t find what you’re looking for – we like to talk to our clients and share our extensive knowledge of the collections.

  • Community

YFA run a programme of film shows, which are available to groups across Yorkshire, daytime or evening, Mondays to Thursdays.

The shows feature a selection of fascinating footage from our collections, showcasing over a century of Yorkshire life on film. We always try our very best to include some material from your area, or to accommodate any special requests, and it’s sometimes possible to put together a tailor-made show on a particular topic, for an additional charge.

For village halls, community groups, and similar, we charge a standard fee of £75.00 plus the cost of travel from York. The charge for cinemas and arts centres is £125, plus travel.

If you’re interested in booking a show, or would like to find out more, contact Ruth Patman by email or by phoning 01904 876550. Our shows are very popular, so do book early.

  • Learning

Our specialist website offers free access to downloadable moving image clips along with catalogue descriptions, contextual information and suggested activities. DVD copies of films that aren’t featured on YFA Online Learning can be provided for research, screenings, classroom use and educational workshops. We can also supply in various encoded file formats. Download our education order form for more information on charges, and to order films, or get in touch to find out how we can help you.

  • Exhibition

YFA have vast experience of working with partners in the non-commercial sector; our footage can be seen in museums and galleries around the country.

Whether you’re looking for footage to use in an exhibition, installation, at a festival, or for any other non-commercial purpose, we can help. The films available online are just a taster of our diverse collection, so do let us know if you can’t find information on a particular topic.
