Why do I need to register?
You can search the site and view films without registering, but if you register and log in you will be able to:
- download films to your desktop
- download PDF versions of the film description and contextual information
- view suggested classroom Activities and Extras, such as worksheets, photos, films and examples of pupils' work that other users have uploaded
- upload your own Activities and Extras and manage these at your home page
- tag and manage your favourite films.
- receive information about the resource and Yorkshire Film Archive events in the Messages inbox of your home page
How do I register?
There is a 'register here' link on the home page. Click the link and fill in your details. The ones marked with a * denote a required field. Read the 'Terms of Use', check the box to show you agree to these Terms and then click 'register'.
Once you have registered you will receive a confirmation email and be able to log in at future visits.

Enter your username and password on the home page and click 'login'. This will take you to your own home page with previously saved favourites, the Activities you have uploaded and messages from YFA Online: Learning.
to topHow do I search the resource?
Enter your search term/s in the search box and either click the magnifying glass symbol or hit return. You will be redirected to the search results page that lists the films which include your search term/s in their title, description, context and browse options.
to topWhat are the browse options?
You can browse the resource in a number of different ways. Use the drop down menus to find films that have suggested Activities for your subject, or films made in a specific decade. For a more general browse of the resource, use the drop down menu to find films within a theme.
to topWhat do the search results mean?
The results of your search will be displayed as a thumbnail image alongside information about each of the films. The information gives you the film's title, the year it was made, the length in minutes, whether it is black and white or colour, silent or sound, the original format (eg. 35mm, 16mm etc.) and whether there are activities attached to this film. Click on either the thumbnail or title to view the film.

How do I view a film?
Click on the thumbnail or title of the film on your search results page. You will be redirected to the film page. Use the controls at the bottom of the viewing pane to play and pause the film, or drag the arrow along the timeline to move forwards and back. You will need Flash Player 10 to view the film.
to topWhat do the technical details mean?
The technical details below the viewing pane give information about the original film. They include the year it was made, the original format it is held on (for example 35mm, 16mm, 8mm or video), whether the film is in colour or black and white and whether it has sound or is silent. The length of the film is also given in minutes and seconds. In some instances, the film on YFA Online: Learning is an extract of the original full length film. In which case, both the length of the extract and the full length are given. The technical details also give the YFA catalogue number and reference any credits from the film.
to topWhy is some of the description in bold?
In some cases, an extract of the complete film held at the Archive has been uploaded onto YFA Online: Learning. The description refers to the complete film and the bold text denotes which parts of the complete film are included in the extract. You can download the description in PDF for future reference by clicking 'download description' above the text .

Click the 'context' tab to read background information relating to the film and its production, as well as useful sources to find out further information. The context can be downloaded in PDF for your reference by clicking 'download context' above the text.
to topHow do I download a film?
If you have logged in you can download the film to your computer. Click the 'download' button below the viewing pane and save the file to your computer. The download version of the film is of much higher quality than the streamed version, so is more suitable for whiteboard use.
to topCan I download the film in QuickTime?
Yes. If you prefer to download the film as a QuickTime file, then click the QuickTime icon below the viewing pane and save the file to your computer.
to topHow do I share a film?
If you want to recommend a film to someone else, you can email a link to the page by clicking 'send email to a friend' below the viewing pane on the film page. You will be asked to fill in your email address as well as the recipient's, and be given the option to include a message in the comments box of the pop up screen.
to topHow do I save my favourites?
If you have registered and are logged in, you have the option to save your favourite films so you can find them more easily in the future. There is no limit to the number of favourites you can select. You can do this in two different ways. Either click the star to the left of the thumbnail on the search results page, or the star above the description on the film page. The star will turn yellow to show you have saved this film as a favourite.

Once you have logged in your home page will load, which includes a list of your favourites. Click 'see all favourites' to view the complete list. If you want to remove a favourite from your list, check the box to the left of the title and click on the bin icon. You can also view your list of favourites by clicking 'see all favourites' above the description on any film page.
to topWhat are the activities?
The activities are suggestions for how you might use the films in the classroom, or other educational setting, which have been piloted with pupils. They include a title for the activity, a brief description of how the film can be used, within which subject/s and Key Stage/s, as well as information about which school or educator has uploaded the suggested activity.

You can only view the Activities if you are logged in. For each film that includes suggested activities, there is an 'Activities' tab above the description. Click this to jump to the list of Activities at the bottom of the page, or simply scroll down. The list includes brief, introductory details about each of the Activities, click the magnifying glass icon to the right of each Activity to see all the information.
to topHow do I add my own Activity?
You can only add an Activity when you have registered and are logged in to YFA Online: Learning. Search for the film to which you want to add an activity and scroll down the film page to the Activities section at the bottom, or click on the 'Activities' link below the title. Click the 'add activity' button. The 'Add Activity' form will appear for you to complete.
- Give your Activity a title and type this into the 'activity title' box.
- Type the name of your school in the box provided.
- Select the Key Stage from the drop down menu. If you want to select more than one Key Stage, hold the control key and highlight the relevant Key Stages from the list.
- Select the subject from the drop down menu. To select more than one, if for example your activity is cross-curricular, hold down the control (or ⌘) key and select the relevant subjects.
- Complete the text box with a brief description of your Activity.
- Click the 'add' button at the bottom of the form once you have entered all the information.
Your activity will be sent to YFA Online: Learning for approval before it goes live on the resource. You will receive an email once the activity is online.

What files can I add as an Extra?
to topHow do I view all the Activities I have added?
When you are logged in to YFA Online: Learning all the Activities you have added are listed on your home page in the 'Activities' section, arranged by title. To view the full details of any of the Activities, click on the title and you will be redirected to the relevant film page. Either scroll down to the Activities at the bottom of the page, or click 'Activities' below the title. Click 'view' next to the activity and you will be redirected to the full details. Only the most recently added activities are listed on your home page. If you want to see a complete list, click the 'see all activities' link.
to topWhat is an Extra?
An Extra is an example of work produced by educators or pupils based on using the film. This could be a session plan, a photograph, video or audio clip for example.
to topHow do I view the Extras?
Once logged in, go to the 'Activities' section of the film page you are viewing. The list will tell you which of the Activities have Extras available. Click on the title of the Extra you want to view.
to topHow do I add an Extra?
To share your own work or that produced by pupils, you can add an Extra either to an Activity you have added yourself, or one added by another user. If you want to add an Extra to your own Activity, you can do this at the same time as adding the Activity. 'How do I add my own Activity'
Simply check the 'upload extra now' box and you will be redirected to a new page with the 'Upload Extra' form. Enter the 'extra name' and 'school name' in the text boxes, then click the 'Browse' button to choose the file you want to upload from your computer. Once you have chosen the file, click the 'upload' button. Your Extra will be sent to YFA Online: Learning for approval before it goes live on the site. You will receive a confirmation email once the Extra is online.
You don't have to add an Extra at the same time as your Activity. You can do this at a later date, by viewing your Activity, or any Activity added by another user (How I do I view the Activities?) and clicking the 'upload extra' button in the bottom right of the screen. You can then upload your Extra as described above.
to topWhat files can I add as an Extra?
The following file formats are supported on YFA Online: Learning:
- document files - PDF, MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel;
- image files - GIF, PNG, JPEG
- sound files WMA, mp3
- video files AVI, MPEG/MPG, MP4, MOV, WMV, Real Media
Uploaded video files can last up to 20 minutes.
How do I log out?
Don't forget to log out before you leave the site. You can do this by clicking 'log out' in the bottom right hand corner of any screen.

The resource offers the opportunity for users to share information, personal stories and comments and upload images relating to the films.
