A SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY (WHITBY - SCARBOROUGH) (1966) film no: 3645

Visited Scarborough this summer and walked part of the old track. What idiots they were who killed this and other lines. What a grand tourist attraction this line would be today with all the marvellous views. So short sighted they were.

Used to travel the line to school. Very sad. Look what the NYMR have done, could have been the same.

I used to holiday in Scarborough with my grand parents and remember walking along the old line near the Ravenscar Hotel in the mid 70s. Such a shame the line went as now it would be a huge tourist hit. Just goes to show how short sighted the BR was. They could have sold the line for £1 and handed all responsibility to volunteers. Anyway, I am 50 now and am planning to cycle the Scarborough to Whitby section before going on the NYMR to see how thing scould have been

This line was a godsend in winter when the A171 road was impassable, a frequent occurence.

It is a pity that this line could not have been kept open, just look at the scenery.

Beeching would have thought twice now , the amount of traffic on the busy A171 Scarborough route. A beautiful scenic journey never forgetten.
