SCENES AT THE RIPON HIGHLAND SPORTS

This film was made for the Ripon Palladium Cinema where it was shown in May 1916.  It captures a sports day for the people of Ripon and the regiments based at the Army Camp at Ripon during World War I.  Shortly after this film was made, many of the regiments competing in this sports day were sent to the battlefields of the Somme.

Commissioned by the Ministry of Information and scripted by Dylan Thomas, this film addressed the need for town planning in Sheffield.  It features two men who discuss pre-war slum clearance and town planning.

This film documents the Opening of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway by the Duchess of Kent on May 1st, 1973.  It includes the towns’ preparation for the arrival of the Duchess as well as a journey along the newly opened rail line.

Made in October, 1950, this film features the Bird Observatory at Spurn Point.  Members of the working party examine and ring many of the birds as well as record their observations.

Made by amateur filmmaker Charles Chislett, this film documents the process of steel production at the Parkgate Iron and Steel Works in Rotherham.  The film was made for the Church Pastoral Aid Society and uses intertitles throughout the film to explain the production process. 

DEAR SERGEANT OR THE STORY OF ROUGH RIDING MOTORCYCLING

Set in and around the grounds of Wentworth Hall, South Yorkshire, this film captures soldiers’ wartime training to become motorcycle riders.  The film includes footage of the riders on the extensive training course.

Made by the Empire Marketing Board for Wormald and Walker Blanket Mills, this film documents the entire process of making woollen blankets at a mill in Dewsbury.

PRINCESS MARY VISITS MALTON

This film documents the visit of Princess Mary to Malton in 1928, an event for which most of the town has turned out to greet her.  Her visit includes the inspection of the Red Cross and Ambulance Brigade as well as the opening of the British Legion Club.
