Why should I register?
You can search and view the films on YFA Online without needing to register. If you register you will benefit from all the extra features the YFA Online has to offer, these are:
- Bookmark your favourite films
- Post your own information, personal stories, comments and images or photos that are related to the films using the 'Open Space' feature
- Keep track of your personal postings via the 'Your Space' section
- Download PDF versions of the film descriptions and context
- Find out when new films have been added
How do I register?
On the homepage you will find a 'register here' link. Click the link and fill in your details. The ones marked with a * denote a required field. Read the 'Terms of Use' and tick to confirm, then click 'register'.
Your registration will be sent to YFA Online Admin for approval. When your registration has been approved you will receive an email. This should take between 1 - 2 working days.

On the homepage you will find the 'login'. Enter your username and password and press the login button. You won't be able to login if you haven't registered. How do I register?

When you are logged in you will find the 'logout' link in the bottom right-hand corner of the page. Click this link and you will be logged out.

back to topHow do I find the films I want to see?
You can search for films in a number of different ways. On every page you will find a free text search, an advanced search and a browse by theme, decade or area.
- Free text search
- Enter your search term into the text box and press the magnifying glass.
- Advanced search
- Follow the 'Advanced search' link, fill in the fields you require and press 'Go'. How do I use advanced search?
- Browse by area, decade or theme
- Use the drop down boxes to narrow your search to North, East, South or West Yorkshire, search by individual decade a particular theme or select all. Press 'Go' to find the films.
How do I use the advanced search?
To access the advanced search option click the link in the navigational bar.
Use the form to construct advanced queries of the YFA Online resource; you can use one or more of the search options to narrow your search.
You can enter multiple fields.
You are not required to fill in every field.
To submit your search click 'Go'.
To clear your search click 'Clear Search'.
back to topWhat do the search results mean?
Every film that appears in your search results will have the film title and an image from the film. Click either of these to access the film page.
The search results also tell you the year in which the film was made, the clip length, whether it is colour or black and white, silent or sound. The original format of the film is also displayed (such as 35mm, 16mm, video etc) and you can read a short synopsis.
back to topHow do I sort the films I have searched for?
Search results are displayed ten per page. Use the «prev or next» buttons or the page numbers in the top right or bottom right corner of your search results page to switch between pages.
Use the drop down option to sort your films in alphabetical order or date order.
back to topI can't view the films, what do I do?
To view the films on YFA Online you will need the latest Adobe Flash Player (Version 10 or newer). If you don't have the latest Adobe Flash Player installed on your computer a link/pop up should appear on your screen when you try to view the films. Follow the link and instructions to download Adobe Flash Player.

The Yorkshire Film Archive aims to ensure that the films chosen for online use are displayed in a high quality format. To view the films on YFA Online you will need the latest Adobe Flash Player (Version 10 or newer).
Computers with dial up or slow internet connection may experience some problems. We recommend you use a high speed internet connection where possible.

To watch the film in full screen feature click the double square symbol in the bottom right of the film window.
To return to the original film window size click the double square symbol in the bottom right of the full screen viewer.
back to topHow do I view films that might be related to the film I have just seen?
If you scroll down to the bottom of each film page you will find a number of films from the online resource that are related to the film you have just seen. They are related by YFA keyword and decade, click on the thumbnail image to view the related film.
In the written context that supports the films we refer to other films that are related or may be of interest. These references are linked via a hyperlink, they will be underlined. Click to view the related film.
back to topHow do I select/deselect my favourite films?
You can only select your favourite films when you are registered and logged in. How do I register?
Once logged in you can select you favourites in two different ways.
On the search results page click the star next to the film image.
When you have clicked the star it will change to yellow and you will be informed that the favourite has been added.
You can also add a film to your favourites via the film page.
Above the description click the star symbol to select the film as one of your favourites, it will turn yellow and you will be informed that the favourite has been added. To deselect click the star a second time.
To view all your favourites click the 'view all favourites' link situated underneath the film title on the film pages.
This will take you to a list of all your selected favourites.
You can delete favourites from your list by clicking on the dustbin symbol to the right of the film title.
To delete more than one film from your list select them individually by clicking on the box to the left of the film title and then click the dustbin symbol next to 'Select All'.
To delete all your favourites click the box to the left of 'Select All' and then click the dustbin symbol to the right of 'Select All'.
You can also access your favourites via your logged in home page.
Click on the film title to view the associated film page. Click 'see all favourites' to go to the full list of all your favourites.
back to topHow do I add my information about a film?
You can only add information about a film when you are registered and logged in. How do I register?
Underneath the film title on the film page you will find the 'Add Info' link. Click this link to access the 'Open Space - Add Information' section.
In the 'Open Space - Add Information' section enter your 'name' (this will appear on the resource), the 'subject' heading of your information and your 'information' that is related to the film.
If you have any images or photos related to the film and information you are adding use the 'Browse' button to search your computer, when you find the image you wish to add double click and your image data will appear in the browse box. You can add up to three images.
When you have completed all the fields click 'add'. Your information will be sent to YFA Online Admin for approval. When your information has been approved you will receive an email and your information will appear in the Open Space tab of film page. This should take between 1 - 2 working days.
back to topHow long does it take for my post to be added to the site?
When you have submitted information as part of the Open Space feature YFA Online Admin will receive an email. These are checked regularly and approval of your post should take between 1 - 2 working days. You will receive an email when your post has been approved.
back to topHow do I find postings that I have previously added?
Via the 'Your Space' section on your logged in home page you will find a list of the most recent posts that you have added to the site. Click on your post and it will take you to the associated film page.
Click 'see all' to view the full list of your posts.
back to topWhat are the technical details?
The technical details are displayed underneath each film on the film pages, they include:
- Year: This relates to the year in which the film was made. We sometimes don't know the exact year so may include a decade or circa.
- Format: This relates to the original format in which the film was made. E.g. 35mm gauge film, 9.5mm gauge film, 8mm gauge film, minidv, video format etc
- Length: This informs you of the clip time and the original film time. E.g. 14:47 / 14:47 mins indicates that the clip length is 14 minutes 47 seconds of a 14 minute and 47 second film. Sometimes we will use only an extract of a film.
- Colour: This informs you of the original colour format of the film. E.g. Black and white, Tinted, Technicolor, Kodachrome, Unknown etc.
- Sound: This informs you of the sound recording associated with the film. E.g. Silent, Mute, Separate optical, Magnetic stripe, Combined magnetic etc.
- YFA No: This number relates to the Yorkshire Film Archive catalogue. If you would like to access the film for other purposes note this number when you contact us.
- Credit: This is an area where we credit people and organisations associated with the film. E.g. the filmmaker, film companies, producers, directors etc.
How do I know if the film is an extract of a longer film?
You can tell if we have selected an extract of the film in a number of different ways.
If the film length/clip time is less than the original film time, e.g. 17:25 / 64mins.
If you can see the following message 'to access the complete film please contact the Yorkshire Film Archive' underneath the technical details on the film page. You can contact us to book an appointment to visit the archive and view the film in full.
If there is text in bold in the film description. Why do some film descriptions have text in bold?

You can only download the film description or context when you are registered and logged in. How do I register?
Click on the PDF download description of PDF download context situated above the film Description, Context and Open Space tabs on the film page.
You will have an option to open the PDF document or save the PDF document. You can save the document to your computer by clicking on save or open and read the document without saving it by clicking open.
When opened the PDF document will appear in a separate window.
To download the PDF film description or context you will need Adobe Reader. You can download Adobe Reader packages from the following site:

Via the 'Messages' section on your logged in home page you can keep up to date with new films that have been added to the resource. The 'Messages' section will be used to inform registered users of new films that have been added to the resource, Yorkshire Film Archive screenings and other relevant information.

YFA Online Learning is an interactive, cross-curricular moving image resource for teachers and learners to enjoy.
The clips featured on YFA Online Learning are much shorter and are designed for use in the classroom or other educational settings. Teachers and educators can register to benefit from the interactive features of the resource.
