Favourite Film
“As a History graduate I’ve inevitably got a particularly strong interest in those films that engaged with the social and political status quo of the period, such as the 1936 film ‘Sheffield Peace March’. It’s an unusual amateur film in that it offered an impassioned and direct anti-war message at a time of immense uncertainty and turbulence, with some fantastic banners on display that give a real insight into the concerns of the time.
In addition, I’ve got a great deal of respect for amateur filmmakers such as Kenneth Tofield, who produced a series of beautifully crafted films of his friends and family over the course of several decades. In the throwaway age of inexpensive digital video, the care and attention that such filmmakers put into these labours of love should act us an example to us all.”
