Harrogate for Health and Happiness: a 20th Century Spa Town

Royal Pump Room, Harrogate, until 31st December 2012. Adults £3.60, children £2.10, concessions £2.55

Newly discovered YFA film footage, showing treatments and therapies offered at Harrogate Royal Baths and Spa in the 1930s, is featured in this exhibition of Harrogate's 20th century history.

These promotional films illustrated many different ways to cure, or alleviate, a variety of ailments, with plenty of treatments on offer.  Although some of these treatments, such as the Turkish Bath, will be familiar to today's spa-goer, others are rather more unusual - and alarming!

Three of the films are also available to view here on our website:

Royal Bath Treatments (1931)

Electrical Treatment (1931)

Spa Treatment Harrogate Pump Room (1939)

The exhibition, which also features historical objects, photographs, and personal memories, is open daily Monday to Saturday, 10.30am - 5pm, Sunday 2pm - 5pm. Note: Closes at 4pm daily between November and March.
